347 area code is actually in the US - Bronx, Queens, that area. May have been some other tpe of scan but not the "international dialing" kind.

I think I ran across something similar. I had over 20 text message from a 347 area code today. Not sure if it will cost me $ but the were persistant with wanting to text. I did reply 3 times.... after I called it a scam I have not received anymore text messages.

Fortunately, you won't get high (phone bills) off of this one. It's almost completely a hoax. Although there have been a handful of reports of this, there is no evidence that anyone ever received an unexpected phone bill as a result (they are already expecting to pay long distance charges, so the $.25/minute of the call isn't surprising). Full debunking of the hoax can be found at http://www.wherecall.com/809.htm .

To me this is a problem with the NANPA dialing plan. There should be a special prefix to make an international outgoing call e.g. 011-1-809...

Then again this is like a PC user opening an ".exe" attachment in their e-mail and then finds out his PC got infected with a virus.
